Teodora Rutar Shuman, PhD

Professor

Biography

Dr. Shuman holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Belgrade University, (former) Yugoslavia, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle. Her doctoral dissertation focused on NOx and CO Formation for Lean-Premixed Methane-Air Combustion in a Jet-Stirred Reactor Operated at Elevated Pressure. Her research includes the development of rapid, low-energy electro-coagulation-flocculation reactors for batch and continuous dewatering of microalgae. Dr. Shuman’s work is widely published in leading peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and has earned multiple Best Paper Awards at ASEE Annual Conferences.

Dr. Shuman and the ME faculty and staff have created a departmental culture of “Engineering with Engineers” that fosters a welcoming and collaborative environment where everyone is immersed in doing engineering and is treated with respect. This initiative was supported by a prestigious $1.86 million NSF RED grant.

Dr. Shuman is a passionate and innovative educator whose project-based courses are designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, cutting-edge, and real-world problem solving. Her teaching has inspired students to pursue advanced studies and careers in engineering. Recent student feedback includes:

Those projects are what helped me recall the material that I learned the most and also be more excited to continue my education in graduate school.

Professor Shuman is truly remarkable; not only is she exceptionally knowledgeable, but her positive attitude and engaging teaching style make her one of the most inspiring instructors I‘ve encountered in my career.
